Triton's Trumpet and Mermaids' Wine Glasses


Here we are at Rodinesque Point, a lovely set of rock pools that never fail to  throw up some curious creatures. Before we plunge in though let's have a look at some of the algae that are growing on the rocks. The larger ones are called Peacock's Tails which you may remember we met in the Blue Lagoon; the ones used in anti-wrinkle cream. The ones that look a bit like satellite dishes on stalks are Mermaid's Wine Glasses and both are considered a delicacy by the pretty little sea slug, Elysia timidawhich lives around here so keep your eyes peeled. Incidentally you won't find Rodinesque Point on any map, it's a name I've given the area because of that weird rock formation on the headland which looks as though it has been sculpted by Rodin. 

This looks like a nice place to slither in. Just a note on underwater photography in shallow, rocky waters; if you're using a small camera like this Nikon Coolpix hold the lens in the palm of your hand to protect it. Note two; when getting into the water don't flop on a crab – they don't like it and they have a pair of pincers to prove the point. The one that you just missed down there is a Marbled Crab, probably out looking for a spot of lunch. An omnivorous little fellow eating mussels and limpets and a similar amount of algae but not above snacking on other marbled crabs. On the other hand he has to look out for the occasional marauding gull swooping in from above, the Musky Octopus coming up from below and other marbled crabs of course. 

We'll slide ourselves into the water and see who else is at home. We seem to have disturbed a Goby that has taken off like a rocket. They like to settle, well camouflaged, in the coarse sand and wait for lunch to come to them. They are particularly partial to those little amphipods that we saw last week so I'm told. But what have we here under this rock looking like a miniature orange dolphin? This is a Sea Squirt and they feed in an entirely different way. They suck water in at one end, filter the plankton out through internal gills and then expel it through the other end. It must be an exhausting job because they process their own body volume of water once a second which by anybody's reckoning is knocking on a bit. 

This next pool is a bit deeper so let's see what we can find in here. Now this has to be our find of the day so far, how's that for a mollusc? It's bigger than my hand. Time for a bit of Greek mythology. The Greek god of the sea is Poseidon and he is married to the Greek goddess of the sea, Amphitrite. They have a son called Triton who acts as his dad's herald. Both Poseidon and Triton carry tridents but Triton has a special implement for calming or rousing the waves (as well as general heralding) in the form of a large twisted conch shell. This is it: Triton's Trumpet – give it a blow, he won't mind. Oh sorry, I hadn't noticed that it was still occupied. It also works better out of the water, come to think of it. 

If we squeeze through this narrow channel we'll find some less protected waters bordering on the open sea. The best way to explore these is to get out and sit on a rock and gently probe through the algae with your fingers and toes. Now that even beats Triton's Trumpet; a trio of Spotted Sea Hares. Note the 'ears' which give them their name. They are a type of sea slug and as such they are hermaphrodite, being both male and female at the same time. When it comes to mating time they form chains like this and they advertise the orgy by releasing a cocktail of pheromones into the water. Scientists in Galveston, Texas (who obviously have a waggish sense of humour) have identified four of these pheromones and named them SeductinEnticinAttractin and Temptin [1]. I take my snorkel off to them.

Jeremy the Vine Hawk Moth is still pupating so I can think of no better way to round off than just watching the sea hares making more sea hares.

The Mind Blowing Dreamfish

There's no getting away from it, this May was very changeable weather-wise but we have a beautiful day today and here we are, back on the cliffs where we left off last week and the Prickly Pear is celebrating the sunshine by bursting into flower.

 
If you look at the lower plates you'll notice that the snails have decided that this is a great place to build their summer city. If it remains dry until October, which is quite possible, then this is where they'll stay all sealed up and conserving moisture.

If you take a look through the binoculars you can see a few Yellow-legged Gulls taking a rest on the clear, calm waters. No, it's not a seagull, there's no such bird (or so pedantic ornithologists maintain). Truth of the matter is we've been calling them seagulls since the 1540s for the simple reason that before we started dropping food all over the place inland and burying heaps of treats in landfill sites gulls were found by the sea where they could find a meal. Gulls, being intelligent, adaptable opportunists now quite happily form colonies far from the ocean waves. Even so, 'seagull' was a bit of a superfluity, after all, we don't call whales seawhales do we? 

That's the cliff path successfully negotiated so let's probe around the rocks and see what's occurring. Quite a few of these little woodlouse like creatures scurrying about. They are related as you might expect; along with shrimps, crabs and lobsters. They are all crustaceans (literally animals that have formed a crust referring to their hard carapaces). This particular one looks almost like two different animals joined together. The front half is quite sturdy with strong legs whilst the back half tapers off with trailing legs. This is rather a neat design; the front legs are land legs and the back ones are sea legs. Crustaceans with this body plan are called amphipods which is derived from the Greek meaning different feet. He's just dropped into the sea – change drive gear! I suggest that we don our snorkels and follow his example. We'll swim out and investigate those offshore islets, round the headland and come in to some rather nice rock pools.

We don't have big tides here in the Mediterranean so you don't have to dive too deep or swim too far to get out of the intertidal zone. Just a few metres down and these islets give us a whole new ecosystem to explore. Now if you thought the amphipod was weird, welcome to the venerable world of the demospongiae. These animals have been around for over five hundred million years. They have no true tissues, organs or nervous systems and they eat and breathe by letting the water flow through them (which is why they are full of holes). You've met them before of course, the familiar bath sponge (see Beachcombin') is a member of this class of ancient animals.

We're about half way to the rock pools now and in slightly deeper water and I see that we have a mixed school of fish swimming along with us which gives me the chance to reiterate the difference between venomous and poisonous. The golden eyed ones are Salema Porgies (which are poisonous) and the others are Dusky Spinefoots, a type of Rabbitfish (which are venomous). Where have you gone? Come back here. The Rabbitfish have a couple of spines containing venom which it uses for defence but don't worry, it's not strong enough to be a danger to us and we're not going to threaten them anyway. The Salema Porgies on the other hand can, in rare cases[1], be poisonous and cause all sorts of hallucinations if you eat them. Hence their alternative name of Dreamfish. So, if something bites or stings and you get nasties in your bloodstream then it's venomous but if you eat something and get nasties in your bloodstream then it's poisonous. A nice little etymological distinction to muse upon whilst you're recovering in hospital.

Well, here we are at the rock pools which we'll be exploring next time so let's take a leisurely swim back to where we left our clothes and just enjoy the sun and the sea.

#Jeremy the #Vine Hawk Moth caterpillar has eaten seven vine leaves and has waddled off under a stone to pupate. This may take him some time but I'll let you know when he emerges in his full glory.

A Bush Full of Beetles

One of the marvellous things about Crete is that there is food growing just about everywhere. Even here on the side of the main road running through Ferma we have wild chicory, a relative of the dandelion. People often get confused between chicory and endive which is not surprising as basically they are merely different species of the same plant. This one is Common Chicory (Cichorium intybus) whereas Endive is Cichorium endiva. Endive comes in two cultivated varieties; curly (var crispum) or broad-leaved (var latifolia) and the wild Endive is Cichorium pumilum which also grows here on Crete. Whichever you choose they're packed full of vitamins A and K and high in fibre so they're good for you.


This is the lane we'll be taking to the sea and there are quite a few plants growing down in this gully here so let's go on a bug hunt (and by bug hunt I mean let's concentrate on the 'true bugs', the hemipterans1, as opposed to anything that creeps or crawls). First off we have a couple of adult striped shield bugs (Graphosoma) investigating a wild carrot that is going to seed and next to that some young green shield bugs (Nezara) on a mallow leaf that are in different stages of development. The little black, white and red one is in his fourth instar and the green one is in his fifth and final instar. So when they next moult the little one will look like the big one and the big one will lose that fetching design upon the back and become plain green with maybe a touch of yellow depending upon his colour morph. Both of these shield bugs (stink bugs in the US) are in the same family, the Pentatomidae, but this little red and black job that you've found is a Deraeocoris from the Miridae family. 

So we have three genera from two families in the order Hemiptera. To put that into some sort of context our genus is Homo, we are in the family Hominidae (with the great apes, orangutans, chimpanzees and bonobos) which is a part of the Primate order which includes us lot plus all the other monkeys, lemurs, gibbons and so on.

You'll never guess what I've just spotted – a bush full of beetles. There are dozens of them buzzing about all over the place. Nicely differentiated little insects; black head, deep orange thorax and pale orange wing cases covering the abdomen. You can tell that they're beetles (order Coleoptera) and not bugs because they have a line down the middle of their abdomens separating their wing cases. The fact that they look a bit like elongated ladybirds make me think that they are Leaf Beetles (family Chrysomelidae) but beyond that I wouldn't like to say. I think I'll collect a few on the way back and put them in a jam jar to observe their behaviour back at the lab.

We were discussing ants last week (order Hymenoptera along with the bees and wasps if you remember) and one is conveniently walking up my arm so we can have a closer look at him. All ants are in the same family, Formicidae, but there are tens of thousands of different ant species (most of which have yet to be classified) so to make things easier we break them down into subfamilies. As far as I know there are three subfamilies on Crete (only three that I've come across so far at any rate) and the clue to differentiating between them lies in that thin bit connecting the thorax to the abdomen (called the gaster in ants). I don't know if you can make it out but in this ant the thin bit, called the petiole, consists of two parts which tells us that it is in the subfamily Myrmicinae. This particular fellow also gives us a clue in the shape of his gaster which is distinctly heart shaped. That is a peculiarity of the Crematogaster genus or Valentine Ants. Sorry? Why has he got twelve legs? I was hoping that you wouldn't notice that. The six in the middle are his own, the six at the head end belong to another ant which he has clamped in his jaws. Just think of him as an undertaker.

And finally...the sea. Down there is a place I call Gully Cove and we'll go down to it next week but for now it's a nice shady place to sit and admire the view. We started the walk by observing that there is food growing just about everywhere in Crete and here is no exception. There's a carob tree (chocolate substitute) to our right with a grape vine growing through it and a stand of fennel to our left. Fish flavoured with fennel followed by chocolate mousse and washed down with a bottle of wine and all the major ingredients to hand. You can't get better than that. After that I would suggest a little nap but if you find that you can't relax then this little pink flower may help. It's Verbena with which you can make a nice pot of herbal tea with scientifically proven soporific properties. Night-night.

Sometimes the best discoveries await you when you return to base. Like this Vine Hawk Moth caterpillar (Hippotion celerio) that was waiting for me on my grapevine when I got back. I've christened him Jeremy (after the BBC Radio 2 presenter Jeremy Vine) and I'll keep you updated on his progress.
